The exhibition What is architecture? is part of the mediation exhibition project of  the Basque Architecture Institute, which in the near future will showcase relevant aspects of architecture in an accessible way, while bringing us closer to intangible and sensory aspects that usually escape the eye.

The project will consist of a series of parts or pieces, each of which will function as a small exhibition in itself, dealing with different topics such as: ‘What is architecture?’, ‘The language of architecture’, ‘Structures and materials’, ‘History and heritage’, ‘Contemporary architecture’…

During August and July, the Institute’s mediation team, Maushaus, worked on a prototype for this future exhibition project. To do so, they collaborated with the Canadian specialist collective Ohisse (https://www.ohisse.ca/), who, through an artistic residency at the IAE and together with Maushaus, the Institute’s mediation team, created this exhibition piece entitled ‘What is architecture?’.

This proposal, located in the cloister of the Basque Architecture Institute, invites us to rethink architecture beyond its traditional definition as the construction of buildings and cities, recognizing its constant presence in our daily lives, from the womb to the shade of a tree. By observing the strategies animals use to inhabit nature, from bear caves to bird nests, we discover that architecture takes many forms to meet basic needs for shelter and privacy.

Note: From August 25th to the 28th, the exhibition will be closed due to an event.
