The Institute of Architecture of Euskadi hosts a new exhibition of the Peña Ganchegui Archive, “’UFG of Igara: artistically considered reuse and demolition”, the result of research carried out by architect Oscar Sangalli Peña at the University of Cambridge. The exhibition addresses the recent demolition of the UFG Warehouse in Igara (Luis Peña Ganchegui; Donostia, 1973), as an opportunity to reflect on the expectations of survival of modern built heritage. What the building wanted to be, what became of it, and what it could have been, are the three questions on which the new exhibition pivots.

‘Arboretum. Trees as architecture’ is our first exhibition in 2024. It is travelling from Arc en Rêve Centre d’Architecture (Bordeaux), where it was presented in September 2021 with the aim of reaffirming the architectural character of trees and highlighting the way in which they have been the object of architectural reflection.

If there is one sport that has left its mark on Basque popular culture, from its collective imagination to its own towns, it is pelota. Present in our society since the Middle Ages, the popular modalities were born in simple undeveloped land and, today, there are courts with stands for thousands of people. It even became the favourite sport of Queen Maria Cristina, who often inaugurated competitions in the first great industrial pelota court, the Jai Alai de Ategorrieta (1877). 

This is an exhibition in four phases based on the idea of intervening on the already built space of the Basque Institute of Architecture, a reflection on the cladding of architecture. It has been developed by four young Basque studios, which have been installing their proposals one by one; the first, in June 2021; the fourth, in July 2022. In this way, the four interventions will be added to the museum route of the Institute of Architecture, as they are installed in intermediate or ‘transit’ spaces.

Wooden architecture is more alive than ever; a material with high structural capabilities and sustainable character, and that now invades the Institute of Architecture of Euskadi with the arrival of the exhibition ‘Egurtek Awards 2022’, a proposal that collects the greatest exponents of wood construction.

Intervening on what is built is always an exercise an act of reflection and doubt, which accentuates or denies what has already been established. The PASAJES program reaches the Euskadi Institute of Architecture and promotes, correctly in an exhibition in four phases, a reflection on cladding in architecture as a transforming practice of the materiality and shape of spaces. Four young architecture studios will be in charge of intervening in different spaces of the building through simple interstitial installations that articulate the museum route of the Basque Country Architecture Institute. 

The Architecture of Cinema project investigates, since October 2020, the development of the architectural space destined to exhibiting films and the place it occupies in the city. It is a project promoted by Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola in collaboration with the School of Architecture of Donostia-San Sebastián with the participation of specialists and students from both fields. The Basque Institute for Architecture is established as the framework for experimenting and developing different proposals, catalyzing this interdisciplinarity through the hybridization ‘I-go zinemara’.

Charismatic, visionary, painter, musician, photographer and cataloged for many years as the “great forgotten architect”, Fernando Higueras (Madrid, 1930-2008) now leaves us as his legacy a visual tour of his work, his life and his way of understanding the architecture. The exhibition Fernando Higueras. From the roots, curated by Lola Botia, who was the couple and collaborator of the architect, arrives in Donostia by the School of Architecture of the University of the Basque Country of the UPV/EHU, which invites us to enter the world of the special and multifaceted Higueras in two locations, the School itself and the Basque Institute of Architecture.

From medieval miniatures to Modern Age engravings, architecture has always been the differentiating element from one city to another. In the 19th century, postcards became the way to show what is representative of each city, but today, the urban environment has become homogeneous and repeated in many cities around the planet due to globalization.

Cut, break, smash, play and share. Amag! is an exhibition on how to interact with space, about the infinite possibilities of turning a sheet of paper into a three-dimensional architectural game.

Every three years since 1989, this call/competition rewards architectural works of any kind that are related to the professional activity of architects and carried out within the area of influence of the Professional Association of Basque-Navarre Architects — COAVN. Prizes are awarded to specific works completed during the defined period as well as to outstanding careers in one of the provided categories. The career of colleagues working at the service of the Administration and works conducted by COAVN member architects outside the Basque-Navarre area were also included some time ago.
