UFG of Igara: artistically considered reuse and demolition explores through plans, photographs and audiovisual material what the warehouse building of the Unión Farmacéutica Guipuzcoana wanted to be, what became of it, and poses a reflection on what it could have been. The Institute of Architecture of Euskadi hosts a new exhibition of the Peña Ganchegui Archive, “’UFG of Igara: artistically considered reuse and demolition”, the result of research carried out by architect Oscar Sangalli Peña at the University of Cambridge. The exhibition addresses the recent demolition of the UFG Warehouse in Igara (Luis Peña Ganchegui; Donostia, 1973), as an opportunity to reflect on the expectations of survival of modern built heritage. What the building wanted to be, what became of it, and what it could have been, are the three questions on which the new exhibition pivots.

ExhibitionPeña Ganchegui Redrawn

On July 11, the exhibition ‘Peña Ganchegui redrawn’ will open at the Basque Institute of Architecture. The exhibition arises from the collaboration between the Peña Ganchegui Archive and the Toledo School of Architecture, whose students analyzed nine projects by the architect from Guipuzcoa for the subject Installations II during the last academic year. Thus, it presents the graphic results of the work carried out, and contrasts it with a selection of the Archive’s holdings related to the works analyzed, offering a complementary view through plans, sketches, models, photographs, documents and original publications.

If there is one sport that has left its mark on Basque popular culture, from its collective imagination to its own towns, it is pelota. Present in our society since the Middle Ages, the popular modalities were born in simple undeveloped land and, today, there are courts with stands for thousands of people. It even became the favourite sport of Queen Maria Cristina, who often inaugurated competitions in the first great industrial pelota court, the Jai Alai de Ategorrieta (1877).

Nowadays, and increasingly so, the concept of housing is increasingly affected by multiple new needs and conditioning factors, which transform the idea that building housing is much more than creating spaces to be inhabited; it is necessary to think collectively, in terms of coexistence and in terms of habitable and living developments that build a city.

This is an exhibition in four phases based on the idea of intervening on the already built space of the Basque Institute of Architecture, a reflection on the cladding of architecture. It has been developed by four young Basque studios, which have been installing their proposals one by one; the first, in June 2021; the fourth, in July 2022. In this way, the four interventions will be added to the museum route of the Institute of Architecture, as they are installed in intermediate or ‘transit’ spaces.

After the end of World War II, Europe rebuilt its industry through the value added of design. It was a reference for both industrialised architecture and the reconstruction of the German industry and economy.

ExhibitionTabula Non Rasa

Over millennia, architecture has embodied the notion of constant change. Most buildings from architectural history no longer exist today in their original form but have been relentlessly transformed over time. In this way they have been able to outlast epochs and to fulfill successive changing functions, for which they were not originally planned. Thus palaces turned into residential buildings, churches into indoor swimming pools and coliseums into urban neighborhoods. Modernism largely broke with this tradition: it declared the old city as obsolete and called for a clean slate of the extant to build the city of tomorrow without any precedence of the past.

ExhibitionHousing the Basque Country

Housing the Basque Country presents the results of the Basque Government’s housing policy from 1981, when competences in housing were transferred to the Region, to the present day. The exhibition aims to succinctly and harmoniously present the various narratives hinging around public housing given that this area is undoubtedly one of those that encompasses the greatest array of social issues, from politics to architecture, from economics to production, from sociology to history and legal affairs. It naturally places those living in these homes at its centre. Certainly, as it affects not only the way we understand homes, but also the way homes are obtained and produced, the way cities are generated, and, in short, the way in which wealth, progress and well-being are generated, public housing condenses society’s most important issues.
